A cartridge (known as "shenou" in ancient Egypt) is a hieroglyphic symbol, it has an elongated shape and is closed with a knot. It symbolizes "everything that surrounds the sun" and has the function of protecting the name of the pharaoh. The cartouches were most often painted yellow or gold (the color of the sun) and were used for two of the five names of a pharaoh. Some cartouches had the role of amulets and were placed in graves. The oval surrounding the pharaohs' names was meant to protect them from evil spirits in life and after death.
