CLUJ UNDERGROUNDS
from December 16 on the "10×10" Installation, on the Boulevard of Heroes.
Because our roads through Cluj were beaten by others before us. And, in order to understand the "surface layer", it is necessary to go down in depth. that's what archeology does.
This gallery presents the results of the archaeological research carried out in Cluj-Napoca by the specialists of the National History Museum of Transylvania, in the last decade and a half.
The multi-millenary history of the settlement on this site is illustrated since prehistoric times, since then a unique Neolithic tomb has been noted.
It passes through the Roman period of the city of Napoca, from which we have preserved an impressive number of private or public buildings, as well as the network of roads and fragments of the western and southern precincts, sometimes overlapped by the medieval one.
The Middle Ages are visible in several places, among which stands out the church of St. Michael with its oldest phases and the adjacent cemetery, and the Modern Age is visible through a series of structures that brought the city closer to the form in which it exists in these times.
The archaeological heritage of Cluj is very rich and varied and is a public asset of the entire community. It is our duty to research it, protect it and make the best use of it, because it is part of our heritage.
Pleasant trip through the "tunnel" that will bring you the inside of local history!

CLUJENI AND THE GREAT UNION OF 1918. THE ROLE OF THE ROMANIAN NATIONAL SENATE FROM CLUJ IN PERFECTING NATIONAL UNITY
December 1, 2023 – January 28, 2024, XNUMXnd floor of the National History Museum of Transylvania
The temporary exhibition organized on the occasion of the 105th anniversary of the Great Union of 1918 is centered on the activity of the Romanian National Senate in Cluj, the first democratic body of the Romanians here, established on November 2, 1918 under the presidency of the lawyer Amos Frâncu, followed by Emil Hațieganu. In the exhibition, the public will be able to see the tricolor scarf that Professor Ioachim Crăciun wore to the Great Assembly in Alba Iulia, vintage documents and photographs, publications of the period, medals, weapons and military equipment that belonged to the national guards, alongside informative texts that follow the path of the establishment and activity of this body of Romanian political power since the fall of 1918.
In the three months of its existence (Nov. 2, 1918 – Jan. 31, 1919), the achievements of the Cluj Senate were special and they are part of the series of events intended to implement the self-determination decision of the Romanians in Transylvania, in the spirit of the documents issued by The Central Romanian National Council in Arad and the Resolution of the Alba Iulia Assembly of December 1, 1918. Overcoming all the obstacles encountered, the Senate immediately proclaimed the right of Romanians from the city and its surroundings to national self-determination and then established itself as a section of the Central Romanian National Council from Arad. He also organized the Romanian national guard from the city and county and facilitated the participation of the 39 democratically elected Cluj delegates in the Great National Assembly in Alba Iulia to vote on the Union Resolution. In the citadel of the Great Union, through their voice, the people of Cluj expressed their adherence to the great historical act carried out here, and many of them were entrusted with high positions of public dignity in the Governing Council of Transylvania or in other bodies of the Romanian central and local administration who changed the fate of the province in the first years after the Union. MNIT PARTICIPATES IN THE EXHIBITION "DACIA. L'ULTIMA FRONTIERA DELLA ROMANITÀ"
November 2023 – April 2024, National Roman Museum in Rome (Diocletian Baths).
About 1000 pieces from 47 museums in the country have been gathered in an event exhibition, the opening of which is just taking place in Rome: "Dacia. L'ultima frontiera della romanità", at the National Roman Museum in Rome (Diocletian Baths). The event marks a double anniversary for the Romanian-Italian bilateral relationship: 15 years since the signing of the consolidated strategic partnership between Romania and Italy and 150 years since the establishment of Romania's first diplomatic agency in Italy.
The project is designed and coordinated by the National History Museum of Romania, under the auspices of the Romanian Ministry of Culture, carried out in partnership with the Romanian Embassy in Italy, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Italian Ministry of Culture, the Romanian Cultural Institute through the Accademia di Romania, benefiting from support from the Romanian Ministry of National Defense.
The exhibition is organized under the High Patronage of the President of Romania and the President of Italy and the MNIT representative at the opening is the manager Mark Felix.
The National History Museum of Transylvania participates in the exhibition with very important pieces from the Roman era and with a treasure dating from the era of migrations, discovered in the tombs of Gepid princesses, in Cluj-Polus. The first piece of the exhibition in Rome is one of the MNIT collection, unique in the world, namely a IV century Roman ballista, discovered in Orșova, within a late Roman fortification, in a corner tower, and which was also exhibited within the exhibition "Limes. The frontiers of the Roman Empire in Romania" (see the virtual tour of the exhibition here: https://www.mnit.ro/turlimes/). More precisely, it is about some components from a medium-sized ballista: one of the two elements (KAMBESTRION), into which the spring and the upper frame (KAMARION) of the ballista were inserted.
Based on these parts, some German specialists recreated it on a 1:1 scale.
The importance of the Romanian LIMES on the territory of Romania is gaining more and more recognition in the European context. In this sense, the manager Felix Marcu, the project coordinator Limes – The borders of the Roman Empire in Romania, will participate on Thursday, November 23, in Paris, at ICOMOS-UNESCO, to support the nomination file of the Romanian LIMES from the territory of Romania in the UNESCO heritage.
The exhibition "Dacia. L'ultima frontiera della romanità" will be open at the National Roman Museum in Rome until April 2024 and "is the largest and most valuable exhibition project of the last 25 years dedicated to the civilization of the Getae and Dacians, the Roman one as well as the civilizations of the first migrants in the area north of the Danube, in the period between VII BC and the end of the century VII BC." The medieval and pre-modern lapidary is temporarily closed
our dear ones,
we have good news and not so good news for today, but even better in the future.
The good news for today is that, despite what we are about to announce, the Medieval Night event at MNIT will take place, with projections, sets, music, entertainers, children's workshops and free access to the exhibitions for those in costume, as promised .
The not-so-good news for today is that, following the malfunctions that occurred yesterday at the installations serving the medieval and pre-modern Lapidary, for the safety of the extremely valuable heritage and the fully restored spaces, it is decided to temporarily close the exhibition space until all the malfunctions are fixed.
The presentation of the Medieval Lapidary exhibition to the public, in the current conditions, given the nature of the unforeseen failures, is impossible. The Medieval Lapidary will remain closed until the defects are rectified, the date of reopening the exhibition remaining the responsibility of the Institutional Resources Directorate of MNIT.
In the long term, however, we have to tell you that the opportunities that have arisen, earlier than we expected, to complete the visitable space with the collection of the Roman Lapidary, lead us to temporarily close public access to the Medieval Lapidary for work on expanding and arranging the exhibition spaces within a unitary concept.
Thus, visitors will have a complete, integrative and meaningful experience in the shortest possible time. Thank you for your understanding and we assure you of all our good intentions.
We are waiting for you at the event!

FROM THE PRIVACY OF THE INTERIORS OF ANOTHER TIME
Exhibition period: November 1 – November 15, 2023, Iulius Mall
This is a new MNIT brand exhibition, which aims to familiarize the public with the most beautiful pieces from the furniture collection of the National History Museum of Transylvania.
Among the cultural treasures owned by MNIT, the furniture collection holds a special, well-defined place. The pieces in this collection illustrate the most important artistic currents in the history of European cabinetmaking: Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassicism, Empire, Louis Philippe or Victorian styles.
In chronological order, the pieces of furniture from the collection of the Cluj Museum of History are arranged between the 16th and 20th centuries. Regarding their provenance, it can be appreciated that most of them belong to the cultural space of Central Europe. Whether they were made in the workshops of local craftsmen or commissioned from prestigious production centers in Hungary, Austria or Germany, they highlight the tastes, artistic canons and, ultimately, the common cultural identity of an area of civilization which stretches from the Alps to the Carpathian Mountains. A certain sobriety of forms, a more accentuated functionalism, "provincial", more modest adaptations of some established motifs - represent the characteristic notes of the furniture that gave shape to the interiors once inhabited by our Transylvanian ancestors.

MEDIEVAL AND PREMODERN LAPIDARY
The medieval and pre-modern lapidary constitutes one of the largest collections of its kind in the country, composed of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance architectural monuments, Baroque sculptural monuments, a vast collection of Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical funerary monuments and the collection of children in plaster casts of various types of medieval funerary and sculptural monuments in Transylvania.
A few things that you may not know about this lapidary and that it would be useful to know before you visit us:
The medieval and pre-modern lapidary of the National History Museum of Transylvania contains one of the most valuable collections of this kind in the country, with a number of 603 pieces.
The Ardelean Museum Society, the forerunner of the current museum, starting from the second half of the 19th century, initiated the systematic collection of architectural elements from the demolition of some historical Transylvanian buildings, most of them from the city of Cluj. So today we have a wonderful collection of architectural elements of the houses of the Renaissance Cluj, the way in which these private spaces of Cluj, the first city of Transylvania, were decorated.
The lapidary today contains a significant collection of funerary, architectural and sculptural monuments from the 13th-19th centuries, entering the collection through acquisitions, donations and through archaeological excavations.
The lapidary collection was first exhibited to the public in 1903, at the initiative of the archaeologist Béla Pósta, director of the Numismatic and Antiquities Collection of the Ardelean Museum Society, in the headquarters of the central building of the University of Cluj.
The most spectacular funerary monuments are the sarcophagi dedicated to the memory of prominent personalities of the Transylvanian nobility.
Gothic architecture from Transylvania is represented by the Gothic archways of the parish church of St. Michael in Cluj and by various architectural elements of the Dominican Monastery in Cluj, donated to the museum following the restoration of the edifice.
In the lapidarium are exhibited the first Renaissance architectural monuments in Transylvania, intended to decorate the episcopal fortress in Gilău and the earliest tabernacle in Transylvania, from the reformed church in Coveș (Sibiu county).
In the lapidary, six baroque statues are exhibited that originally decorated the attic of the court of honor of the Bánffy family castle in Bonţida. The statues were made between 1751-1753 by one of the most famous Baroque sculptors from Transylvania, Johann Nachtigall, representing various characters from Ovid's Metamorphoses.
Today's redevelopment aims to reorganize the lapidary according to thematic and chronological criteria, as well as to highlight this collection with the help of a modern, interactive design, dedicated to both specialists and the general public.
We are waiting for you to discover or rediscover this space, in a new form!
